The Connected Office: How IoT Is Disrupting Office Products

Posted by Sonda Sahley on June 01, 2017

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a hot topic right now and for good reason. The explosive growth of internet-connected devices is disrupting nearly every aspect of how we live and work. Consider how many “smart” or “connected” devices or products that you use on a daily basis – for example smart home appliances, fitness trackers or connected vehicles.

The data collected by these devices can help improve our lives and enable us to make smarter business decisions. Soon, everything will be connected. Research firm Gartner, Inc. forecasts that 8.4 billion connected things will be in use this year, and anticipates that number to jump to 20.4 billion by 2020.

Office products are no exception. IoT is already changing the way that we work, powering new opportunities for productivity and innovation. Technology products and services are revolutionizing the way that the modern office is being designed and utilized. For example, cutting-edge collaboration tools like connected digital whiteboards enable employees, both remote and office-based, to interact in a much more meaningful way. This results in productivity gains across the enterprise. According to a recent OPI article, Hot Topic: The Connected Office, IoT is expected to be the biggest driver of productivity and growth over the next ten years.

For busy procurement teams, new technology and IoT-enabled devices can automate purchase requests. Imagine your breakroom’s smart refrigerator reordering snacks, for example, or your MFD ordering toner when it gets low. Office products that rely on scheduled maintenance (think: printers, laptop computers) could notify the manufacturer or service provider that maintenance is needed before an issue even occurs – minimizing downtime and preventing unnecessary replacement.
