Independent Contractor (1099) Changes to Watch

Posted by Tim Holland on October 25, 2017

During its first year, the new White House administration is impacting regulations related to independent contractor categorization, as the Populus Group points out in their article “Let it go? DOL withdraws guidance on Independent Contractors and Joint Employment.” The White House will likely have further influence as the President appoints new members to the National Relations Labor Board (NLRB) in 2017/2018.

What does this mean for CU members? Impacts to the classification system are yet to be determined, but with partner Populus Group we are closely monitoring any future changes.

In the meantime, state and federal agencies will continue to identify misclassifications and enforce significant tax penalties and implications, putting your organization in both legal and financial risk. That’s why it’s important to have a partner and program to help manage these types of workers and associated risks.
