    The Challenge

In 2000, the Kansas legislature approved funding to restore the state's capitol. The landmark structure, completed in 1903 after 37 years of work, had seen its last major renovation in 1917. The far-reaching restoration would encompass exterior repair, new electrical systems and furnishings. It also provided for the creation of underground parking and the conversation of basement areas to offices, classrooms, cafeteria and a Visitors Center.

    The Design

Officials wished to bring back the grandeur originally envisioned by the state's founding fathers while preserving an architectural and historic treasure. "The space helps tell the story that this is a restored building. We wanted to be faithful to portraying what work areas could have been like at that time," states Barry Greis, Statehouse Architect. The project would follow a master plan that called for a more effective and efficient use of space, greater efficiency in layout, improved proximity between functional areas and greatly enhanced services for citizens.

    The Furnishings

Design consultant Treanor Architects researched furnishings and listed three manufacturers in its recommendation. Based on quality, appearance and cost, the selection committee chose National. In making their decision, officials were mindful to complement the design integrity of the building with furnishings made for enduring service.

    The Results

National has played a vital role in the landmark restoration by providing furnishing of quality and style befitting elected officials and their state's grandest structure. The investment is a testament to the vision of the people of Kansas and ensures a legacy to be cherished by generations to come.

"We have received continual compliments on the quality and design of the furniture. People are really pleased." -Barry Greis, Architect
